Not pictured 1976 TR6 and 1998 SAAB convertible

Did a bit of fleet maintenance today — drained a little oil out of the Volvo that I overfilled last week and checked lots of tires.

Every one of the 13 tires I checked was a bit low, including the pristine never used spare in the Volvo which was reading about 15 PSI out of spec 60 PSI.

Also check the age of your spare, if you’ve got an ancient minivan like me. I had a blowout, and the guy at Discount Tire told me that my donut spare had expired. I didn’t know that was a thing . And he wasn’t trying to sell me one because he said they don’t carry them. Hell, the Honda dealership couldn’t even tell me how long it would take for them to get one in. I ended up ordering one online and a local shop mounted it for free.

I checked the spare in my Cabby a few weeks ago.

0 psi.

And it looked to be the original to the car. 34 years. Huh.

I should probably do something about that.

5 tire rotation ftw!

I wonder how long it’ll be before the Bronco and Wrangler are the only vehicles sold new with a full-sized spare.

I wonder whether we’re already there. 4Runner probably. SUVs only at this point?

My spare is not full sized tho. But yes.

The spare in my Datsun is a Michelin MXVIII that i had on a previous Datsun that  I drove in 1996. So that tire is at least 25-30 years old and it holds air kinda.

Would the space hold a full sized?  I used to keep the least bad of my tires when I'd get a new set.  (You do need a spare wheel for that, though those used to be easy to pickup at a local junkyard)

Ha yes, the spare in the (1976) TR6 is a Michelin X-Radial. Which was the OEM tire, so probably original to the car. It holds air, doesn’t look too cracks and I even was forced to use it once. I drove pretty slowly.

Pretty sure the spare in the 85 Jag is factory too. The main tires are about to age out as well.

If I had to use it I wouldn’t be going very fast. Around 1996 I had a flat in my B210, it had a factory bias ply tire as a spare. It worked but was scary to drive on.

Welp, I already know that my spare’s useless... My Mustang has oversized wheels, so if I try to use it on the rear, the difference in circumference would wear out my LSD clutches while driving . And as for up front- nope, not gonna  fit over my upgraded brakes. So if anything happens, I’ll have to use one of my AAA membership’s free tows.

I still carry the spare anyway though. Never got around to taking it out, and I figure a few extra pounds of rear ballast for my front-heavy car couldn’t hurt.

Not certain, but I think it’s only big enough for the donut.

I live by the (bad) idea that I have an inflator, so I can always pump it up on the road (and if I can’t, I have AAA).

Generally tires over 10 years are “too old”. However, there’s nothing that automatically makes them so, it’s still about the condition of a tire. A spare in the trunk well is probably in much better shape at 10 years than an underbody spare, and both are likely better than a 10 year old tire that’s been on the car, and thus exposed to the sun. Tire shop will probably still refuse to work on the old spare even if it looks pristine though.

Haha yes. I was very sad to give up the spare when We got our third MINI, our first S model with run flats and no spare. I actually did need the run flat capability one day; fortunately it was on the way to work which was near a tire shop that was able to get a matching replacement.

Was pleasantly surprised to find my 2016  Volvo even came with a spare.

The DT guy said just that--he would not work on the spare. The van is 17 years old, and I replaced the donut two years ago.

I have instilled the spare tire pressure check on my whole family, including my m om. When she brings her car in for service, usually at the dealer, she makes a point of telling them to check the pressure in her spare.

I like to live dangerously, so I swapped out the runflats on my 1-series for standard summer tires and bought a “mobility kit” in case I ever have a problem. Been about two years so far and the only issue I’ve had has been a slow leak from a nail.

I went even more dangerous last fall - time for new snows and couldn’t find a set of runflat snows that weren’t RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Didn’t even bother with a kit.

Pretty happy with the RFT Dunlop DriveGuards for summer though.

Yes I’m guessing you really have to ask for it. The Volvo had for a full “inspection” about 6 months ago when it was in to the dealer for oil change. Pretty sure it’s never been checked since new.

Bit of a PITA as you have to remove it from the well to get to the valve.

Curiosly, the spare for my Jaguar doesn’t fit in the well when fully inflated. I had to let it down to about 25  to get it in

Sounds like someone at Jaguar didn’t send the correct diameter specs for the spare tire.

My sister ’s Volvo suffered a blowout after hitting a giant pothole at high speed on the highway. Sh e called AAA to change the tire.  When they pulled the spare from her trunk, it was discovered that it had no air.  The AAA truck was not equipped with a compressor and another had to be dispatched. She was on the side of the road with a flat for 3 hours.....
